Common Signs of Engine Trouble that We Can Fix at Our Tampa Auto Shop
It's always best to get to the shop when you first suspect that engine trouble is brewing. If you ignore the symptom, then the problem could soon worsen and require repairs that are much more expensive than should've been necessary. At Bay Brothers Automotive, our local mechanics are highly experienced with engine repair in the greater Tampa area.
The Check Engine Light
When the check engine light turns on, it doesn't necessarily mean that total engine failure is imminent. But you should still have the mechanic conduct computerized diagnostics so that the issue can be accurately identified and then resolved before it escalates.
Common Symptoms of an Engine Problem
If you hear strange noises coming from your engine, then a serious problem may be developing. Knocking noises are definitely a reason to be concerned and should be investigated. They can be caused by issues such as insufficient lubrication, a lean air/fuel mixture, or a bad rod bearing. If you hear grinding noises, then you may have a bad water pump or power steering pump. Squealing noises are often due to serpentine belt issues.
Power loss is also an issue that should be brought to a mechanic's attention. In an older vehicle with high miles, a gradual and minor loss of power isn't necessarily problematic. But if your car loses a lot of power quickly, then you could have a piston or head gasket problem.
Another sign of trouble is that there's discolored/excessive exhaust smoke emerging from your tailpipe. Black smoke is a sign that too much fuel is being burned. Blue smoke suggests that you have an oil leak. White smoke is symptomatic of a coolant leak, and could indicate a blown head gasket.
